Judging Winston All Wrong

I have been wrong about Jameis

Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m the first one to admit when I have been wrong on any certain issue. Which is exactly why I am writing this article about Florida St. quarterback Jameis Winston.
Earlier this season I wrote an article in which I said I would not draft Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota in the first round solely based on their talents. While that still stand true for Mariota, I cannot truthfully about Jameis Winston.
I, like many others, have let his immaturity and off the field issues cloud my judgement of him as a player. I’m writing this article to right my wrong and to highlight the things in his game that will make him a franchise quarterback at the next level.
There are quarterbacks starting in the NFL that don’t have the refined footwork that Jameis Winston does in the pocket. He is my kind of quarterback, he moves up in the pocket, and can deliver balls on time and on point with pressure up the middle.
This is one of my favorite parts of his game and for good reason. In a time in football where everyone wants the flashy run first quarterback, it’s refreshing to see a pro style ready quarterback coming into the draft.
Deceptive Mobility:
Even though he is a true pocket passer, he does have deceptive speed & mobility, and the ability to extend the play. Also being so well built Jameis can use his strength to shed off would be tacklers and get outside of the pocket to make a play with his arm or legs.
He’s not as mobile as an RG3 or even a Marcus Mariota, but neither of those quarterbacks have his ability to throw the ball from inside the pocket, but Jameis can also do a little bit of what they do outside the pocket, when necessary.
He’s Clutch:
Last but certainly not least, this kid is the definition of clutch. How many times, this season alone, have we had the pleasure to watch Jameis Winston lead his team to a close victory in the fourth quarter? I’ve personally lost count, but there have been numerous times when his team has needed him and he has delivered, each and every time.
Like I mentioned earlier, I may be a little late to this party, but I’m here nonetheless. I will admit that it was his off the field issues that most certainly made me cautious of Winston but it has also been the talent surrounding him.
There’s no doubt that in his first season he had an immense amount of talent around him, and same can be said for this season as well. But something is different about this season, he has been the unquestioned leader and the one that they all look forward to when they need a leader the most.
Jameis Winston is a franchise quarterback, and someone that a franchise will be able to build around if his maturity continues to grow. He is unquestionably the best quarterback available in this draft and he should be selected with the number one overall pick, based on his talent alone.
