Arena Football League to Crown a Champion

Sharks to Face SaberCats at ArenaBowl XXVIII

***ArenaBowl XXVIII coverage continues all week***

LAS VEGAS – After one of the most dramatic weekends in AFL Conference Championship history, the San Jose Sabercats and Jacksonville Sharks will square off in ArenaBowl XXVIII Saturday, August 29 on ESPN. Kickoff from the Stockton Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

The National Conference champion SaberCats clinched their fifth-ever ArenaBowl berth after holding off the Arizona Rattlers, 70-67, Saturday night in a game that will be discussed and debated for quite some time. Second Team All-Arena selection Erik Meyer tossed nine touchdowns in the game, enabling San Jose to advance to their first ArenaBowl since 2008.

Jacksonville clinched the American Conference in equally thrilling fashion, going on the road to defeat the Philadelphia Soul, 61-56. Former League MVP Tommy Grady connected with All-Arena wideout Joe Hills for five touchdowns in the win, but it was a fourth quarter defensive stand that sealed the deal for the Sharks. LaRoche Jackson secured an interception in the back of the end zone as time expired to send Jacksonville back to the AFL title game for the first time since winning ArenaBowl XXIV in 2011.

San Jose will enter the matchup with the best regular season record (17-1) in the history of Arena Football, having beaten opponents by an average of 22.2 points per game in 2015. Meanwhile, Jacksonville clawed its way back from a 1-5 start, going 11-3 in their last 14 games and becoming the first team in League history to reach the ArenaBowl after beginning the season 0-4.

This will be just the fourth meeting ever between the Sharks and SaberCats and the first postseason matchup between the two clubs. San Jose holds a 3-0 advantage over Jacksonville, most recently defeating the Sharks, 68-48, in Week 4.

Kickoff for ArenaBowl XXVIII is set for 7:00 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN.
