NFL Films hosts Broadcast Boot Camp
Opportunities for Players to Earn Guest Host Position with NFL Broadcast Partners
Nineteen current and former NFL players will take part in the 10th annual NFL Broadcast Boot Camp next week (May 16-19) at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, NJ. In addition, six Broadcast Boot Camp graduates will participate in the “Advanced Broadcasting” program.
The four-day boot camp, co-directed by the NFL Player Engagement and NFL broadcasting departments, covers a wide range of topics with instructors from top broadcast and radio networks, including Big Ten Network, CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC, NFL Network, SiriusXM, and Westwood One Radio.
Sessions include hands-on work in areas such as tape study, editing, studio and show preparation, radio production, production meetings, and field reporting. Each player will tape segments as a game analyst and a field reporter and will also have a chance to serve as a live guest host on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
The “Advanced Broadcasting” curriculum will include one-on-one coaching and feedback from faculty members, as well as a voiceover audition with EA Sports. Players will further develop their skills in play-by-play analysis, radio broadcasting, field reporting, and other techniques.
“Over the last decade, this program has resulted in numerous career opportunities for our players in the competitive broadcasting field,” said NFL Vice President of Player Engagement CHARLES WAY. “The boot camp not only provides players with the skills but also the confidence to succeed in the media industry.”
Participants will have the opportunity to earn a guest host spot with one of the league’s United Kingdom broadcasting partners during the 2016 season. Last season former NFL players JABARI GREER and BEN HARTSOCK were selected to serve as studio analysts for an NFL regular-season Sunday on Sky Sports in the U.K.
Of the more than 200 players who have taken part in NFL Broadcast Boot Camp, more than one-third have earned broadcasting jobs as a result of their participation in the program.
Participants are selected through an application process based on NFL playing experience, essays, and demonstrated interest in media.
