Here are the important dates for the off-season

With the season behind us, the focus on the 2017 season is on the horizon. There is still a lot of activity in the National Football League coming in the next month or so including the tagging of Franchise and Transition players, the NFL Combine, as well as the start of free agency and the new league year.

Here is what is to come in the foreseeable future.

February 14th – Beginning at 12:00 pm EST NFL clubs may begin to sign players whose 2016 CFL contracts have expired. Players under contract to a CFL club for the 2017 season or who have an option for the 2017 season are not eligible to be signed.

February 15th – First day for clubs to designate Franchise or Transition Players. Designations must be made prior to 4:00 pm EST on March 1st.

February 28th thru March 6th – Combine Timing and Testing, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana.

March 7th – Clubs are permitted to contact, and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2016 Player Contracts at 4:00 pm EST on March 9. However, a contract cannot be executed with a new club until 4:00 pm EST on March 9.

March 9th – The 2017 league year and free agency period begin at 4:00 pm EST. Trading period for 2017 begins at 4:00 pm EST after expiration of all 2016 contracts. All 2016 player contracts will expire at 4:00 pm EST All clubs must be under the 2017 salary cap prior to 4:00 pm EST.

March 26th thru March 29th – Annual League Meeting, Phoenix, Arizona. This is when it is expected a vote on the Raiders proposed move to Las Vegas could take place.

April 3rd – Clubs that hired a new head coach after the end of the 2016 regular season may begin offseason workout programs. (49ers, Chargers, Rams, Bills, Broncos, and Jaguars)

April 17th – Clubs with returning head coaches may begin offseason workout programs.

April 21st – Deadline for Restricted Free Agents to sign Offer Sheets.

April 27th thru April 29th – 2017 NFL Draft, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

May 5th thru May 8th – Clubs may elect to hold their one three-day post-Draft rookie minicamp from Friday through Sunday or Saturday through Monday.

May 12th thru May 15th – Clubs may elect to hold their one three-day post-Draft rookie minicamp from Friday through Sunday or Saturday through Monday.
