The Road Thru Indy: Specialists

Our run up to the Combine kicks off

by Three Point Stance Magazine Scouting Director Justin Day | @Jdayerrday |

Okay before you start to roll your eyes, this article is a necessity. Keep in mind we are going to go through every single position in this draft and bring you 3 names to keep in mind while watching the combine. Yes we’re kicking it off (see what I did there?), with the kickers and punters. So let’s get started…

The Known Commodity: P, Cameron Johnston – Ohio St.

This one was pretty tough, I don’t even consider myself the king of special teams from a scouting perspective and I usually don’t get started with special teams this early in the process. My thought here is that most of you have seen Ohio St. play more than once and you probably don’t know his name, usually a good sign for a punter on that caliber of a team. Also I know the kid is Australian and as an LSU fan I know the punters from down under can usually get the job done. He was also a 3 time Ray Guy finalist.

The Name You’ll Learn: K, Jake Elliott – Memphis

This kid I know, I’m a Jake Elliott fan. Apart from a subpar sophomore campaign he has been nothing but dynamite at Memphis. He holds the school record for consecutive made PATs at 202 (he’s never missed one) and a guy named Stephen Gostkowski once roamed that locker room. He also went 12/15 (80%) from 40+ yards this year. A team looking for a kicker, peep Jake Elliott.

The Virtual Unknown: K, Conrad Ukropina – Stanford

Do you actually not know who Conrad Ukropina is? I have no clue, I’m not going to lie but with a last name like Ukropina how could I leave him out of this article? The kid’s credentials are superb; he was the MVP of the Sun Bowl this year, hold the school record for best field goal percentage (.824) and most consecutive made extra points (108). Moral of the story much like every position in this draft, except quarterback, this class is loaded. I’m just going to type his name one more time for the hell of it, remember the name Conrad Ukropina, if you didn’t know it already?
