Undefeated for how long?
Los Angeles and Kansas City are off to hot starts, can either run the table?
The only remaining undefeated teams in the NFL both sit at 4-0, and that is the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams. Of course, we have seen how impressive Patrick Mahomes is so far this season. But on the flip side, we also see how consistently good Jared Goff is as well. The question remains, who is has the best shot between these two teams to run the table and be the 2007 New England Patriots at the end of the regular season?
That is exactly what I am going to look at in this article. There are many factors that play a role in a team having a legitimate shot at going undefeated. Those factors can include: health, strength of schedule, and talent among many other factors. I am going to look at each team and give my reasons why I think they will or will not run the table this season.
Kansas City Chiefs:
The Chiefs are a team that has a lot of young talent on the offensive side of the ball. Kansas City boasts a great, young quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. They also have Kareem Hunt at running back, Tyreek Hill at receiver, Sammy Watkins at receiver and Travis Kelce at tight end. Offensively, the Chiefs are in great shape this season. For me, the issue lies on the defensive side of the ball. In Kansas City’s base 3-4 defense, they do not have the dominant defensive lineman that they once had. They lack the elite pass rushers they once had in Tamba Hali and Glenn Dorsey, but they do have Justin Houston, Reggie Ragland and Eric Berry.
Going forward this season, Kansas City has some decent opponents left to play that includes Jacksonville, New England and the Rams. Any of these three teams could force Kansas City to slip up and lose their first game of the season.
Los Angeles Rams:
The LA Rams are arguably the most complete team in the NFL right now. The Sean McVay coached team is clicking on all cylinders offensively behind Jared Goff. LA is very talented on the offensive side of the ball, they have Goff at quarterback, Todd Gurley II at running back and Brandin Cooks, Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp all at wide receiver. The Rams not only have great talent on offense, but they also are very efficient and effective on offense.
On defense, LA has the best defensive line in the league in my opinion. Michael Brockers, Ndamukong Suh and Aaron Donald are LA’s front three on defense, and then in the secondary they have Sam Shields, Lamarcus Joyner and Marcus Peters. That defense is going to be key for the Rams’ continued success this season. The toughest remaining games on their schedule are New Orleans, Green Bay, Philadelphia, Chicago and Kansas City. Any of these four teams can cause LA to slip, but I believe that will be very tough because of how the Rams are playing right now.
Of these two teams, I believe that the most likely team to run the table is the Los Angeles Rams. Here is why. Kansas City has a lot of youth on their team right now. That includes quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He has great talent and ability, but I am not sure how long he can sustain this level of play. Also, on the defensive side of the ball, I do not believe that they can stop all of their opponents.
All of that being said, I believe that LA runs the table because this team made it to the playoffs a year ago and lost early. Jared Goff, Todd Gurley and this high-powered offense is looking to bounce back from last year and build on it. Not to mention the great defense that LA boasts this season. The Rams have a few tough games still on their schedule, but I believe with the combination of talent on offense and defense combined with Sean McVay and Kyle Shurmur this is a team that can do great things this season, and that includes running the table this year in the NFL.
