Preview and picks of the weekends card
Due to recurring illnesses to both Justin and Brandon, there will be no show this week. We figured we’d save you from hearing 45 minutes of coughing.
Anyways, TO THE GRIDIRON! We finally get to see Birmingham and San Antonio on the road, Salt Lake and Atlanta at home, and the first broadcast exclusively on Bleacher Report Live.
Arizona Hotshots (2-0) at Salt Lake Stallions (0-2) | 3pm Eastern | Bleacher Report Live
Arizona -4.5, o/u 44
Justin Day: ARI goes to SL and on paper it seems like a safe bet that the Hotshots would come out victorious. I’m not ready to call Salt Lake dead yet. They’re much more of a sleeping giant in my eyes. Arizona got the better of Salt Lake in week one, I think this week the tables turn. Look for Salt Lake to get their first win of the season here.
Brandon Rush: Arizona proved last week that even if they struggle out of the gates, they can overcome miscues en route to victory. I’m kinda amped to see Salt Lake’s home environment, by far the leagues most picturesque setting, and see how the crowd responds to their team for the first time. In my experience in the Arena Football League, Utah always had loud and knowledgeable fans.
SLS are a good team, just had two tough contests right out of the gate. Defensive end Karter Schult is an MVP candidate and with some consistent quarterback play, the Stallions are going to be game in their home opener. A fast start is a must, Arizona can put points on you in bunches, but the altitude might be too much to bear. I’m taking Salt Lake +4.5 points and I like the Stallions to win the game straight up.
Memphis Express (0-2) at Orlando Apollos (2-0) | 8pm Eastern | NFL Network
Orlando -15, o/u 45
JD: My god, Memphis’s offense is enemic, and that’s putting it mildly. It doesn’t help that they’re going up against Steve Spurrier’s Orlando offense. Memphis will hold its own on defense but I don’t see their offense keeping up. Memphis falls to 0-3 and Orlando stays undefeated.
BR: Last week Justin and I both said that the -14 spread against Memphis was insulting. No professional team should be a two touchdown underdog without a slew of injuries. And we won that bet. Now that the Express are 15 (!!) point dogs at Orlando, it seems just as insulting, but a bit accurate. Memphis is a mess offensively outside of Zac Stacy, who last week became the first 100-yard rusher in AAF history. Orlando is just too stacked against Memphis, and should win comfortably. I’m not betting this game.
Birmingham Iron (2-0) at Atlanta Legends (0-2) | 4pm Eastern | CBS Sports Network
Birmingham -7, o/u 38.5
JD: I tried to warn people about Birmingham! I really like this team and Luis Perez is a baller at QB for them. Atlanta is another team looking for their first win but I haven’t been a fan of their roster since it was announced. As a whole, I think Birmingham might be the best team in the entirety of the AAF. Look for them to win a close one on the road in Atlanta and stay undefeated.
BR: If you need a nap on Sunday, there are few better TV alternatives than this game. Atlanta’s offense is booty, and the defense is adequate. Curious to see what the Legends home environment looks like, but I am not optimistic. Undefeated and winless streaks continue. Betting Birmingham -7 and probably the under.
San Antonio Commanders (1-1) at San Diego Fleet (1-1) | 8pm Eastern | NFL Network
San Diego -2.5, o/u 43.5
JD: The second repeat match up of the week San Antonio travels to San Diego to take on the fleet. This time San Diego should be employing a different QB but I’m not sure it will make that much of a difference. These are the only two teams that are 1-1 and I think San Antonio is the best one loss team in the league. I think they travel to San Diego and roll the Fleet.
BR: WHAT DOES VEGAS SEE THAT I DON’T?! San Antonio lost a great game at home last week against the #1 team in my power rankings, now they go on the road to face a team they beat 15 days ago facing a team that wasn’t exactly stellar in getting their first win last week, YET THE FLEET ARE FAVORED. Give me SA plus the points and the under for a whole bunch. Logan Woodside is legit, and Justin sold me on Mekale McKay, dude can flat out play. Kenneth Farrow is going to have a big day running the ball for the Commanders and will win comfortably on the road.
