An Uneducated Take: Week 8
Hey! I Learned!
Another week down with statements made, tragedies averted, and a lot of boring games were seen. As far as picks go, I had a very good week. I went 4-1 this week with missing the under in the Saints-Bears game. That brings it up to 14-10 on the year. It’s always better to be above .500! So, what happened this week?
Chiefs Avert Tragedy
Bad news: Mahomes is injured. Good news: He won’t be out long. Considering the Chiefs upcoming schedule, that could hurt a bit. I’m gonna go ahead and mark the next two weeks as losses as I can’t see them having anything for the Packers or Vikings. All is well for them though. They will still be in first place in the division with those two losses, and they would move on to the Titans and Chargers before the bye week. Plenty of time for them to work Mahomes back in before a December in which they will definitely need him.
Ravens Make a Statement
I called this one but I was sweating it a bit. Give credit to the Ravens defense for keeping Wilson in check as Lamar Jackson had an awful day as a passer, but great day as a runner. This one felt a lot closer than the final score, but the fumble return for a touchdown put this one out of reach.
This game may have a huge impact on standings down the line. Seattle suffering a home loss to fall a game and a half back of the 49ers, and the Ravens solidifying their lead in the NFC North. Baltimore really needed this win, especially with 5 of their next 6 games are against teams that have winning records.
Teddy and the Saints Do It Again
Another impressive victory for the Saints on the road and Bridgewater remains undefeated as a starter, but it looks like his ride may be over. Drew Brees is returning to practice this week and if he’s ready to go, Teddy goes back to the bench. If I am Sean Payton, I would not even entertain the idea of Brees playing this week. They’re playing the Cardinals. It’s just not worth it when the bye week is after that. If you continue to rest Brees, you’ll have him at 100% against the Falcons in Week 10. That feels like the safe play. I really hope that is what happens because I would love to see Bridgewater in at least one more game.
Adam Gase: Denying those penalties was the biggest “fuck you” that Belichick has seen all season. Hence the smirk.
49ers-Washington: It really says something when the biggest highlight was a sack at the end of the game and players hydroplaning. This game was awful.
Arizona Cardinals: Hey, they’ve won three in a row! Yay! It was against the Bengals, Falcons, and Giants. Aww!
Aaron Rodgers: Glad to see you’re still alive.
Texans-Colts: Great show both teams put on this past Sunday. Can’t wait to see it again in Week 12!
Titans-Chargers: Chargers bad, so bad. Titans get an amazing stop at the end! Something about a goal line stop to win a game pleases me so much.
Cowboys: You’re still awful, but good on ya for beating the Eagles at home.
Emmanuel Sanders to the Niners: Now you have no picks after the first round until the 5th round. Hope it’s worth it!
Jalen Ramsey to the Rams: That’s a high price tag!
Sanu to the Pats: Even if it is a mistake for New England, no one will be able to tell or care.
Game of the Week
Detroit and Minnesota put on a hell of a show Sunday is what turned out to be a classic duel. Both QBs had four touchdowns and threw over 300 yards. I was hoping Detroit would bounce back after being sodomized and left by the side of the road by the refs in Green Bay last week, but this isn’t some fairy tale. Minnesota was just too much for them.
As stated last week, Kirk Cousins continues to show that public shaming works (Is that why NFL Films decided to embarrass Sam Darnold?). He’s now at 976 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 1 interception over the last three weeks. Compare that to his first four games of the season when he went for 735 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. The only downside for Minnesota is that Adam Thielen got hurt. The Vikings should let him rest this week. They play Washington and I sincerely doubt they will be able to mount any challenge.
Initially, the Sunday night game looked to be really special. Mahomes vs Rodgers. Not something you get to see often, but now it looks to be an easy Green Bay win. Chiefs opened at -4 and it has swung to Green Bay -4.5. I expect Green Bay to cover in this one.
New England vs Cleveland certainly doesn’t sound like the greatest matchup, but we do get to see Belichick gameplan against Baker Mayfield for the first time. Patriots are currently sitting at -13 and I think we get the biggest upset of the season this week. I take Browns on the money line to beat New England in Foxboro. Obviously, I’m crazy. It just feels right.
San Francisco puts their undefeated record on the line in Santa Clara against the Panthers. This is another good test for the Niners and they are sitting at -5.5. I expect them to cover as I see Kyle Allen having a long day trying not to be killed by the 49ers front seven.
To round it out, we also get Philadelphia and Buffalo. The Bills are sitting at -1.5 and I think the Eagles win this one outright giving Buffalo their second loss on the season. See you next week!
